Written in the early fifties when Rattigan was at the height of his powers, The Deep Blue Sea is a powerful account of lives blighted by love - or the lack of it. The play opens with the failed suicide of Hester Collyer who has deserted her husband for the charms of an ex-fighter pilot.
History
The Deep Blue Sea was first performed in London in 1952. It has since received numerous revivals, and the character of Hester Collyer has gone down in history as one of the great roles of British theatre. A notable revival was staged at London's National Theatre in 2016. In 2011, Terence Davies directed a film version of the play, which starred Tom Hiddleston as Freddie.
